The day itself
About Tihar
Marigolds strung across every doorway, oil lamps along the balcony, and Bhai Tika at the end of it. Lighter and brighter than Dashain: this is the festival for colour rather than ceremony, and the one where younger women dress up most.
What is actually worn
- Jhumka and gold, catching the lamplight, which is the whole point
- A lighter necklace for Laxmi Puja on the third night
- Red potey for Bhai Tika
- Bangles that sound, because Tihar is the loud festival

The colour rules
These are stricter than they look from the outside. Getting them right is most of dressing correctly for the day.

Leaving it late?
In Sydney you can order the morning of the gathering and wear it that night, two hours to your door, before 7pm. Everywhere else in Australia, order the day before.
